Under the streets of a magic city |
|
The Canal St Martin is a vestige of the age when goods were brought into the city by barge. Today the chug of diesel motors has become less frequent, and the locks are used mainly by sightseeing boats. The ominous highpoint of the journey is the tunnel under the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir: mysterious beams of light are cast down through the ventilation shafts onto the dark brackish water. Alongside, the Métro dully bellows through the vault, and the underground is as busy as the streets above. |
